Calculus practice SAC: a train and a level crossing
Use a position model to work with velocity, acceleration and timing. The questions ask you to connect the maths to the context, including when a train passes a level crossing.
Question 1's set-up and all of Question 2.
This is original practice material for Units 1&2, designed by me. Use it alongside what you're covering at school.
How to use it
- Start with the question paper and give yourself a chance to try it before opening the solutions. Keep your working, even if you're not sure it's right.
- Compare one part at a time. The set-up and what the answer means are worth checking as well as the final number.
- If you get stuck, have a look at where your approach and the solution part ways. We can work through that together in a lesson.
How I design the practice
Students often lose SAC marks to the reading rather than the maths. School SACs wrap questions in a theme, with facts tucked into the wording and numbers that aren't needed, and clean practice questions don't prepare students for that.
The practice SAC above is written that way. Since May I've been working out what makes practice like this work, using the study design and VCAA's own conventions as well as what I've learnt from real SACs. That's now a recipe I build every sheet from. AI drafts the questions to it, and the worked solutions show where each mark is earned.
